What is a "No Database" point-of-sale (POS)?

"No Database" POS

A database-less POS is a relative new term that describes a light-weight and highly sophisticated POS solution (both mobile and fixed-lane) that uses the power of the underlaying platform (typically where the settings, customers, products and transactions are stored) to drive the POS solution itself.

Speed is often achieved by utilizing some form caching mechanism so that you do not have to query products and prices as the items are being rung up and that is combined with asynchronous posting of sale transactions so that the POS terminal is not waiting.

These types of systems are about as close to omni-channel you can get and yet capitalize on speed, simplicity, agility and flexibility due to their light-weight nature.

"Client-Server" POS

A client-server POS has its own database and platform (locally or in the cloud). They are generally very closed systems and not suited for larger retailers operating multiple stores or have a mobile necessity. This is because an integration has to be written to cobble together the POS system and the  supply chain/financial systems you are using. These more traditional solutions are risky, highly bespoke, never meet expectation, lack flexibility and ultimate will cost revenue and increase costs. 

"Embedded" In-Store POS

These are solutions (similar to "No Database") that are developed and embedded in the underlaying ERP system and therefore rely on the underlaying platform data. They are ideal for clienteling environments and stores that do not process a high-volume of transactions at peak. In other words, these solutions require the internet, are slow and more of an eCommerce experience (but in the store). For the most part, not suited for most types of retailers.
